The Apple Doesn't Fall Far, or Does it?

What's it like to choose to go into a profession, in which your parent has excelled? When making a decision like that do you do it because it's in your genes? Do you do it because it was a huge part of your environment growing up? Do you do it because you think you are a shoe in, so it's kinda a lazy choice? I don't know why, and on this one I won't guess why?

For whatever reason these women have chosen to walk the path their parents blazed, and some have found success. Others you might not know at all. Either way you have to admire their bravery. I am afraid to try the same recipes my mother has mastered.

This is Angelica Huston, she is daughter to John Huston, plus her grandfather was an actor as well. She was in an on and off relationship with Jack Nickolson for about 15 or 16 years. He has since been involved on and off with a younger skinner version of Ms. Huston.

This is Quincy Jones' daughter Rashida Jones. She has recently started a budding career. She has played a role on The Office, and other parts here and there.

Ms. Drew Barrymore has found much success in the entertainment industry. She comes from a long line of actors and actresses, but in my opinion she is the most successful of them all well maybe not, but I'm not old enough to know the success of the others. Her father is John Drew Barrymore Jr.

This is Shari Belafonte. Her father is Harry. She kicked around a bunch in the 80's, and recently I saw her in a commercial (as a background person), and that sparked the reason for this post. Seeing her got me to thinking about Hollywood Royalty, and how they end up where they end up.

This is Rae Dawn Chong, her father is Chong of the Cheech and Chong movie series & comedic duo. She played in one of those campy hip-hop movies of the eighties, and that's the only notable thing I can think of. Feel free to fill me in on any of these folks.

Blythe Danner is the mother of Gwyneth Paltrow. They both have names that sound like European fairies, hehehe.

This is the daughter of Diana Ross and Berry Gordy. When she was born, she was supposed to a white man's baby. Diana Ross married a white man because she told him she was pregnant, then out pops this beautiful brown baby.

I too have wondered about this. While I do believe creativity is genetic-sometimes (based on the level of success) I have to wonder if they are just taking the easy 'hook up' route. And, no-I have not seen Rae Dawn Chong in anything noteworthy since her Beat Street appearance...she was SO unlikeable in that role...

"I'ma need you to not put Ms. Ross baby daddy bi'ness in the street!" You crack me up with your celeb gossip!

Rae Dawn Chong appeared opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger in Commando (1985) and opposite C. Thomas Howell in Soul Man.

Another famous daughter who followed her parents is Jamie Leigh Curtis, daughter of Tony Curtis and Janet Lee.

Whitney Houston Daughter of Cissy Houston (gospel-blues singer) and cousin of Dionne Warwick and 'Dee Dee Warwick'.

Rae Dawn Chong was in The Color Purple too. She was "Squeak", I think that was her name, Harpo's rebound girlfriend after Sophia. But I haven't really seen her in anything since that.

Great post as always :)

Yes, Yes, Yes!!!!! Squeak!!!! I forgot about that. Thanks Dori!!!!

@Veriance I don't remember Commando and can't come up with anything for Soul man either.
Jamie Leigh Curtis is a another one, she has a pretty decent career too!

@T.A.M. I got Diana's business out of a book. I'm just recycling info, hehehe. She was unlikeable in Beat Street, hell they were all unlikeable. In your words " I am still mourning the hours of my life wasted" on watching that movie (a few times, I have to admit).

I love the thoughts you think!

I do remember Rae Dawn in Soul Man, I'm surprised nothing's coming up, she was C. Thoma Howell's leading lady and I think I heard they even dated for real (probably just an old rumor).

Sherry Bellafonte (hope I didn't butcher her name) was always so beautiful I think. I wonder too how she ended up in the background of a commercial. Maybe she was doing a friend a favor or staging a tres low key comeback...

Nearly everyone in my family was an artist in some fashion. It's been a natural thing for me to do, but there's also a daunting pressure to excel. Who want to be a mere shadow of their parents?

I think the key to success is to pick something SLIGHTLY different than what your parent does and that sets you apart.

AS for having a "shoe-in", I think that only takes a person so far. If they aren't good at what they do, they won't get that future opportunity offered to them.

@shiborigirl, I totally understand. My family is like that about cooking. My sister who is a pretty good cook, gets the title "the one who can't cook." I have to defend her often because she really gets a bad wrap. It's hard to be in a family where everyone excels at the same thing. I deliberately add an extra flair to my cooking, just to escape criticism of not making a dish "according to the family recipe." Surprisingly, I get the most praise for my cooking from the family.

yeah, i think about this as well and usually come to the conclusion that it must have something to do with people growing up in that environment. and maybe a bit of the lazy choice thing, too. i don't know. it's interesting, though.

did not know that was squeak from color purple. this is trivia land!

lmao @ the diana ross drama. gotta love it. (the baby popping out nice and brown, i mean.)
